Hyderabad and Punjab faced off in the last match of the league stage of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. The match was of little significance to the tournament as the four teams for the playoffs have already been decided.

Hyderabad won the toss and decided to bat in the match. They did not start their innings on a good note as Priyam Garg(4 of 7) was dismissed early. After his dismissal, Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi stabilized the Hyderabad ship with a 47 runs partnership. The partnership was broken in the 9th over of the innings as Tripathi (20 of 18) was dismissed by Harpreet Brar. This started a mini-collapse for Hyderabad in which they lost four wickets for 35 runs. Abhishek was one of the wickets to fall at this stage. He scored 43 runs off 32 deliveries hitting 5 fours and 2 sixes. Hyderabad was poised at 96 for 5 in 14.4 overs and things seemed gloomy for them. But Washington Sundar (25 of 19) and Romario Shepherd (26* of 15) stitched a partnership of 58 runs and restored a bit of balance to the Hyderabad innings. On the back of the batting exploits of the duo, Hyderabad managed to reach a total of 158 for 8 in their 20 overs. Harpreet Brar was the pick of the bowlers for Punjab picking up three wickets for 26 runs from his 4 overs.

In reply to a moderate total Punjab had a blazing start as Jonny Bairstow (23 of 15) started batting in the fifth gear. But Fazalhaq Farooqi picked up his wicket in the third over of the innings and the team’s score at this stage was 28 for 1. But the momentum that Bairstow provided at the start of the innings was carried forward by Shahrukh Khan. He took on the bowlers from the beginning of his knock. Dhawan was also looking to stay positive at the other end. But it was the speedster of Hyderabad, Umran Malik who picked up Shahrukh Khan (19 of 10) in the 7th over of the innings. Punjab was 66 for 2 down in 6.3 overs when Khan walked back to the pavilion. Mayank Agarwal (1 of 4) was soon to follow as Washington Sundar picked up his wicket. Liam Livingstone came out in the middle and looked settled from the first ball. He continued the momentum that Bairstow and Sharukh Khan provided and made the target look smaller as he batted in an aggressive mode.  However, Dhawan (39 of 32) and Jitesh Sharma (19 of 7) were dismissed by Farooqi and Suchith respectively, Punjab had no trouble in achieving the target courtesy of Liam Livingstone (49 of 22). They got over the line with 5 wickets in hand with 4.5 overs remaining in the match. With the win Punjab finished the tournament with 7 wins, while Hyderabad lost 8 of their 14 matches.
