History was scripted in Chennai on Monday as Afghanistan did the unthinkable. The 22nd game of the tournament saw Afghanistan take on Pakistan. At the end of the game, Pakistan were condemned to their third straight loss of the ODI World Cup 2023 campaign.

Earlier in the day Babar Azam won the toss and chose to bat first on a hot day in Chennai. Mohammad Nawaz had to pull out of the game as he was suffering from a fever. Shadab Khan came in place of Nawaz after missing the Australia game.

Afghanistan had lost their previous game against New Zealand by a huge margin. Noor Ahmed came in for his ODI World Cup debut as he replaced Fazalhaq Farooqi. A win for the Afghans would give them their 2nd win over a test nation in World Cup matches.

Batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan began well with their opening batters adding 56 runs for the first wicket. Azmatullah got the first wicket when he had Imam Ul Haq caught by Naveen Ul Haq for 17. Babar Azam and Abdullah Shafique then added 54 runs for the 2nd wicket.

The right-handed opener scored his second half-century of the tournament before departing for 58. Babar Azam kept the run-scoring going as he got to his second ODI World Cup 2023 half-century. Noor Ahmed then gave the Afghanistan team a foot in the game with his timely wickets.

The 18-year-old accounted for Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan. The youngster ended the day with figures of 3/49 from his ten overs. Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed scored 40 each as they helped Pakistan reach 282 for 7 from their stipulated 50 overs.

Chasing 283 to win, Pakistan’s sloppy fielding cost the team very dearly. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran added 130 runs for the opening wicket. Gurbaz scored 65 runs off 53 balls before he fell to Shaheen Afridi caught by Usama Mir.

Ibrahim Zadran carried on as he scored 87 runs from 113 balls with 10 hits to the fence. Just when he was looking set for a century, his knock was ended by Hasan Ali caught behind by Rizwan.

Rahmat Shah then scored yet another half-century as for the 1st time in their history Afghanistan’s top three had hit half-centuries in the World Cup. The historic moment arrived when skipper Shahidi hit the winnings and celebrated wildly.
