‘Painkillers sirf akhti…’ – Shahid Afridi rips apart Shoaib Akhtar for his critical remarks on prime Pakistani pacer
Pakistan lost to England in the 20-20 World Cup 2022 and the Three Lions had to put on a great fight chasing a meagre target of 138 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. For the unversed, Jos Buttler’s men chased down the target with just 6 balls to spare and by 5 wickets, on the back of Ben Stokes’ unbeaten 52.
To add more to England’s chase, Pakistan’s prime bowler, Shaheen Afridi, managed to bowl only 2 overs fully and eventually walked off after bowling the first ball of this third over due to injury. Shoaib Akhtar, the former Pakistan pacer, was unhappy with the same and claimed that the Men in Green pacer should have continued playing, although it was a huge risk.
“When your main bowler becomes unfit, then it creates problem for you. Shaheen (Afridi) was never fully fit, but we cannot put the entire blame on him as he bowled well in the past 2-3 matches. But this is World Cup final. Even if the leg breaks. Whatever happens, happens. Just keep running and do something. But this was not in our fortune,” Akhtar was quoted as saying.
It has a lot of side effects: Shahid Afridi
However, the former Pakistani skipper, Shahid Afridi, slammed Akhtar for his comments on Shaheen and claimed that painkillers should be taken only with precaution. Further, Afridi claimed that he too had taken it before and had to endure a lot of pain after the match, when he did it.
“Nehin, nehin, nehin…main nehin samajhta ki yeh jayas baat hai. Painkillers sirf akhti taur pe hota hai. Humne bhi bohot dafa kiya hai. But uske bhi side effects bohot saare hote hai. Kyunki uss time toh sunn ho jati hai and pain khatam ho jati hai, but pain aur zyada bar jaati hai next day (No, no…not at all, it’s wrong. Painkillers should be taken in a disciplined manner. I too used to take it. But it has a lot of side effects. It does numb the pain for a while, but after the match day, it tends to pain even more),” Afridi said on Samaa TV.
