Indian T20 League season 16 is set to commence on March 31 as Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat will take on MS Dhoni’s Chennai. The first game will be played at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, all teams have started preparing for the prestigious tournament in their various camps. Although some teams like Punjab are facing setbacks way before the tournament as England batter Jonny Bairstow is set to miss the event.

In a recent news report injured Bairstow is considering missing the Indian T20 League to focus on rehab ahead of Ashes and 50-over World Cup. Notably, the 33-year-old batter has missed various important matches after he injured himself while playing golf. Bairstow fractured the ligament of the left leg and underwent surgery.

According to a recent news report in the Guardian, Bairstow is yet to gain full match fitness as he has got a metal plate inserted in his left leg. The England superstar will be looking to gain fitness before Ashes and the 50 Over World Cup. Although, Punjab and England and Wales Cricket Board are yet to make any statement on the availability and fitness of Bairstow.

Shikhar Dhawan is set to lead Punjab in Indian T20 League

Notably, Bairstow had a very average season with the bat for Punjab in 2022. The English wicketkeeper-batter scored just 253 runs in 11 matches at an average of 23.00 with just two half-centuries. Although his injury could be a blessing in disguise for Punjab as they can now rope in an in-form batter to replace Bairstow.

As Punjab released their captain Mayank Aggarwal before the Players auction, they roped in Star India opener Shikhar Dhawan to the team. Dhawan who has previously represented Hyderabad as captain will now lead Punjab and will look to change their fortunes. Dhawan will be their third captain in as many seasons. Notably, Punjab will take on Kolkata at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on April 1.

However, fans react to the fitness updates of Jonny Bairstow and say never to trust English players. A Twitter user said, “Punjab ke to L lag gaye.”
