‘This is a play Chennai would like to forget’: Mumbai edge past Chennai in low scoring chase
Chennai and Mumbai faced off in the second ‘El Classico’ of the 2022 Indian T20 League season. It was the 59th match of the tournament which took place at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Mumbai won the toss in the match and decided to field first. What came after this left everybody in a state of shock. Chennai was rocked early as Daniel Sams picked up two wickets in the very first over. However, the dismissal of Devon Conway (0 of 1) was controversial, but it was expected that Chennai as a professional team would have gotten over the unavoidable circumstances. The Men in Yellow never came back from the jolt they received in the opening over of the match. Wickets kept falling in clusters and Chennai was left in the deep sea after the end of the powerplays. They were 32 for 5 down after six overs. The players in the middle were Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni, and Chennai required a Dhoni special to make a comeback in a very important match.
But as it turned out MSD ran out of partners from the opposite end. After the loss of Shivam Dube (10 of 9), Dwayne Bravo and Dhoni stitched a partnership of 39 runs and it looked like the repair is on the way. But Bravo (12 of 15) was dismissed in the 13th over when the team’s score was 78 for 7. The tail-ender did not trouble the Mumbai bowlers much and Chennai could add 19 more runs for the last three wickets. The only resilient effort amidst the massacre was from the skipper MS Dhoni who scored 36 off 33 balls and remained unbeaten. Daniel Sams was brilliant with the ball picking up 3 wickets for 16 runs in his four overs. His opening spell gave the Men in Yellow a shock form which they never recovered and were bundled out for 97 runs in the 16th over.
After the end of the first innings, it was expected that it would be a comfortable sail for Mumbai. However, Chennai was not prepared to go down without a fight. They picked up the important wickets of Ishan Kishan (6 of 5) and Rohit Sharma (18 of 14) within the first four overs. Mumbai at this stage was 30 for 2 and Chennai was making the target look bigger than 97. The Chennai bowlers were on fire in the powerplays and reduced Mumbai to 36 for 4 in six overs. The bowlers for the Men in Yellow made it clear that the match was in no way over. Two young batters in Hrithik Shokeen and Tilak Varma kept their nerves and steadily progressed towards the target. They built the partnership block by block and was releasing the pressure of their team.
The duo stitched a partnership 48 runs and got Mumbai out of the hole. Hrithik Shokeen was dismissed for 18 of 23 in the 13th over. But the target was well within reach by then. They were 81 for 5 form 12.4 overs and required 17 runs from 44 balls. Tim David (16 of 7) and Varma (34 of 32) ensured there are no further slip ups in the chase as Mumbai won the match by 5 wickets with ball remaining in the match. This was the third win for Mumbai in the 12 matches while Chennai lost their 8th match in 12 outings. This defeat also ensures that Chennai is officially eliminated from the match.

So Convay got a dodgy LBW decision against him first ball of the game. And couldn’t challenge the decision as DRS isn’t available right now due to power cut at Wankhede. What to say #CSKvsMI

Match 59 No DRS. Suddenly . Shouldn’t there be a provision for an alternate in such a situation? Pathetic. That ball went to another planet all together #CSKvsMI

A day to forget so far for #CSK. One debatable call but that cannot explain away a mere 97. Bumrah and Sams were outstanding today.

Much life in this game still .Mukesh Choudhary and Simranjeet have been excellent. But the #MI batting order and approach have been a bit baffling
