After a dominating performance against England in the three-match T20I series, India was scheduled to start the ODI series at the oval on 12 July 2020. However, on the eve of the series opener, India dealt with a major blow as Virat Kohli got ruled out of the match for a groin injury.

Now, speaking of the match, India went with a strong pace bowling unit with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Prasidh Krishna. Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first. Ahead of the 50-over format World Cup in 2023, India was looking to do good while Jos Buttler was looking to start on a winning note in his first-ever ODI match as captain.

Things did not go well for England as their batters failed to give the expected start against Indian bowlers. The pace trio of India ran a rampage over English batters as they got bundled out for 110 runs in just 25.2 overs. Their star-studded batting line-up with Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Liam Livingstone, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Jos Buttler failed miserably to the fiery spell of Jassprit Bumrah. Bumrah recorded his career-best figure as he picked up six wickets by conceding 17 runs in 7.2 overs. All the wickets of England were taken only by pacers as it happened for the first time for India while bowling first.

In reply, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan made a steady start as they put up 56 runs in the first 10 overs. England bowlers failed to take a single wicket as India managed to chase down the target in just 18.4 overs. Indian skipper remained not out by scoring 76* runs off 58 balls while Dhawan contributed with an unbeaten knock of 31 runs off 54 balls. This emphatic win over England gave India a lead over them in this series with two more matches to go. The second ODI is scheduled to be played at Lord’s on 14 July 2022.
