Veteran India pacer recalls his conversation with Mohammed Shami over match-fixing allegations
India pacer Mohammed Shami has been one of the most dangerous bowlers in Tests and ODIs. Over the years, he has troubled the world’s top batters in both formats. However, around five years back, Shami was going through some trouble as his now-estranged wife, Hasin Jahan filed a series of complaints against him. First up, the right-arm pacer was booked for domestic violence and adultery.
This was followed by match-fixing allegations. It all started after India’s tour of South Africa in early 2018. After the investigations, the Amroha-born player was cleared of the match-fixing allegations. On the other hand, the court has recently asked the India player to pay a particular sum to Jahan and their daughter as alimony. Meanwhile, India veteran pacer Ishant Sharma has revealed his conversation with Shami during that phase.
I was 200 percent sure Mohammed Shami couldn’t do such things: Ishant Sharma
Sharma was having an interaction with Cricbuzz, on their ‘Rise of New India’ show. In the show, the 2013 Champions Trophy winner said that he had a word with Shami over the matter. The former added that the ACU approached both players and asked questions related to the match-fixing allegations. Sharma further added that he was 200 percent sure that his teammate wouldn’t be involved in the ghastly crime.
“I had a word with him and he did share of lot on the topic. Whatever had happened, the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) had approached us all, and they had asked us whether Shami could do a match-fixing or not. Just like policemen lodge a complaint…I was asked everything and all was written down. I had told them, ‘I don’t know his personal things but I’m 200 per cent sure he can’t do that because I know him that well.” When he heard I said those words, he realised that what I think of him and our bond became stronger,” he said.
