Watch: Ishan Kishan fake appeal draws ire from commentators during first ODI against New Zealand
India wicketkeeper batter, Ishan Kishan faced the ire of the commentators after trying to fake Tom Latham’s dismissal. The incident happened in the 16th over of New Zealand’s innings. Kuldeep Yadav had gotten rid of Henry Nicholls with a pacy googly on the third ball of the over. At this stage, the Blackcaps’ stand-in skipper Tom Latham came out to bat. Yadav bowled a slider to the left-handed, Latham.
The latter kept it out as he played it toward the mid-wicket fielder inside the circle. Meanwhile, one of the bails fell and it looked like the New Zealand skipper stepped on the stumps. The India team appealed for the hit-wicket, only to find out Kishan had removed the bails intentionally. When the replays were shown on the big screen, commentators such as Murali Karthik and Sunil Gavaskar weren’t happy.
“You can appeal all you want, but that is not the right thing,” a visibly upset Kartik said on air.
“As a joke, it was ok. But then to go and appeal, don’t think that is the right thing to do. As a joke to maybe say or suggest to Tom Latham that what had happened earlier on when India were batting… that is understandable. But not to appeal. That is not on. That is not cricket,” said the legendary former India captain, Sunil Gavaskar.

Was Ishan Kishan trying to troll Tom Latham?
Well, the answer to the question is yet to be known, however, that could be a possibility. Apparently, during the Men In Blue’s innings, Hardik Pandya was given out despite the ball missing the bails and had gone straight into Latham’s gloves. The third umpire faced the flak of the netizens for the same. Ishan’s actions in the 16th over of the second innings might be a way to troll Tom Latham in a fun way. Talking about the game, the Rohit Sharma-led side won by 12 runs.
