Watch: Quinton de Kock’s over smartness results in 5 runs penalty against Zimbabwe in 20-20 World Cup

South Africa and Zimbabwe faced off against each other in the 20-20 World Cup on October 24, Monday, and the match ended with no result owing to incessant rains. The ongoing tournament has already witnessed many dramas unfolding on the field, and Monday’s clash was no different.

It was a 9-over match and in the last over of the first innings, de Kock tried to run the batter out by removing one of his gloves. However, the ball hit the gloves on the field and South Africa was penalised 5 runs for the same. 

It was later clarified that it was for the ball hitting an object intentionally placed on the field and the players were baffled by the act. The South African wicketkeeper can be seen puzzled by the penalty and the pacer, Anrich Nortje, is visibly upset with de Kock’s act.

Can South Africa make it to the semis?

After putting 79 runs on the board at the end of 9 overs, the Zimbabwean bowlers struggled to restrict the run flow and ended up conceding 51 runs in just 3 overs before rain interrupted yet again. The second innings was further restricted to only 7 overs and the target was revised to 64.

However, the match was eventually called off as each team managed to bag 1 point apiece. De Kock, who alone accounted for conceding 5 runs extra, batted with supreme intent as the batter scored 47 runs off 18 balls before the match was called off. The southpaw will look to carry on with the momentum in the upcoming matches and seal the game for the Proteas. 

South Africa’s clash against Pakistan and India will be crucial as a defeat against either of the teams could prove costly for them. The team is placed third in the Group B points table below India and they will have to work hard to make it to the Top 2. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, will have to toil hard to clinch victory against India, Pakistan and Bangladesh as they are in supreme form.
