Watch: Rohit Sharma shares nervous laugh when asked pitch for Ahmedabad Test

After the first three Test matches of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy ended within three days, the focus has now been shifted to the pitch at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad. Australian skipper Steve Smith stated that the Ahmedabad pitch was ‘probably the best-looking batting pitch’ of the series. With a lot less dry surface and a tinge of green, the Motera ground is expected to provide a game of full five days.

Smith won the toss and decided to bat first in the final Test. However, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma seemed quite nervous after losing the toss and hoped that the pitch stays like this throughout the five days as India will be batting last in the Test match.

“Not the surface that we saw in the first three Test matches. It looks like a very good pitch. I don’t know when it’s going to start turning but yeah, looks good. Obviously, I hope it stays this way all five days,” said Rohit with a nervy smile after the toss.

‘We are playing on flat pitches and then the results don’t come’ – Rohit

Rohit was also asked about the Test matches finishing early in India. He said that it is all about the lack of skill in the players that the matches couldn’t last for five days. The pitch of the Holkar Stadium in Indore was rated poor by the Apex Cricket Council after the third Test ended within the first session of the third day.

“What can I say about that. People have to play well for the game to last for 5 days. Games are not lasting for 5 days even outside India. Yesterday in South Africa, the game got over within 3 days… Australia as well in the first Test match. So it’s about skills… people have to adapt with skills. If the pitches are helping the bowlers, batters need to try and test their skills. It is not about always making sure that we are playing on flat pitches and then the results don’t come,” Rohit said.

The visitors seem to take full advantage of the pitch as they have already scored 149 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in the first two sessions. Usman Khawaja is unbeaten on 65 runs off 180 balls, while Smith is also batting 38 runs off 129 balls. For India, Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami shared a wicket each.
