Lionel Messi won two Golden Balls in FIFA World Cup

With 91 goals scored in 2012 – 79 for Barcelona and 12 for Argentina – Messi set a new record for the most goals scored in a single year. Also, he holds the Champions League records for both the most goals scored in the group stage (80) and the round of 16 (29 goals). Messi is the first player from Argentina to score 100 goals. He hit the century mark on March 28 of this year during a friendly game against Curaçao. He even did it in style, scoring three goals in the 7-0 victory.

Argentina’s 28-year title drought was ended when the Inter Miami star led his side to the Copa America victory. This historic win solidified his legacy and answered all concerns about his ability to perform on a global stage. The Argentinean is now three short of his former Barcelona teammate Dani Alves’s record of winning 46 major club and international awards, as he has 43 to his name so far. He scored 672 goals and made 269 assists for Barcelona. In addition, he is the only player to have won the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball award twice.
