‘Empty Old Trafford’ trends on Twitter as Manchester United fans demand for change in ownership
Manchester United have got off to a poor start to their 2022-23 season after having suffered a 2-1 defeat in their opening fixture against Brighton. Under the new manager Erik ten Hag, United’s start is certainly a sign of worry and the fans aren’t too happy about it.
United are scheduled to play their next game against Liverpool at home and hopes aren’t too high either. Star footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t feature in the first game, reasoning that he didn’t do enough training prior to the start of the fixture. More than the on-field performances, fans are troubled by what’s happening off the field in terms of decision-making. As per reports, the United are keen to avail the services of Marko Arnautovic and Adrien Rabiot.
The club reportedly offered a bid of around 8 million pounds. However, Balogna has rejected the offer. The United aren’t considering increasing the bid. Furthermore, Erik Ten Hag hasn’t been able to avail the services of Frenkie De Jong but is keen to get Rabiot. The interest shown by the club to sign Rabiot hasn’t seem to have gone down well with the fans. Amidst that, the fans have started a protest over the Glazer Ownership by staging a widescale boycott of Old Trafford.
After the 2-1 defeat, the fans stormed social media with Tweets on the full boycott of the Old Trafford ground, in a bid to send a powerful message to the American owners. ‘Empty Old Trafford’ has been trending with numerous people supporting the movement. Currently, the Glazer family owns full ownership of the Manchester United club.
By 2005, the Glazer family took full ownership of Manchester United for an amount of nearly $1000 million. For many years, the club has been in debt and the management’s decisions over the last few years have left the fans agitated. The fans are now demanding the owners of the club to quit. Manchester United are due to play their next match against Liverpool on Tuesday.
