Former Australia wicketkeeper batter Adam Gilchrist has advised Alex Carey not to give up on his white-ball dream. The latter was dropped during the ODI World Cup 2023 winning campaign after matches against India and South Africa. Carey was replaced by Josh Inglis to take on the opposition bowling at number seven. Meanwhile, Gilchrist has said Carey must not pressure himself for playing the white-ball format.

“I actually like the fact that he has spoken so openly about his desire to get back into that white ball team. I see no reason for him to shut down that goal. I don’t think it changes anything in his life by the way he goes about his cricket, the way he trains. I don’t think he sits at home and worries about it, so it is not draining him of mental energy and perhaps affecting his Test cricket. I think it is terrific. He is hungry to play for Australia as much as he possibly can and if it never happens again, it won’t be through a lack of trying,” said Gilchrist on Fox Cricket’s The Follow On podcast.

The three-time World Cup winner added that the selectors going for Inglis ahead of Carey was justified.

“The decision by the selectors to go with Josh Inglis in the World Cup was justified. He contributed nicely to that World Cup win. But I think Alex Carey would have done a very serviceable job there as well. Credit to the selectors,” Gilchrist said.

I feel like I have got a lot of white-ball cricket left: Alex Carey

In another interview, the wicketkeeper batter said that he has some solid performances to his name in ODI cricket. He added that he has a lot of white-ball cricket left.

“I still feel like I’ve had some pretty solid performances over the last 12 months in one-day cricket. The timings of the leaner trot led to that decision (to drop him at the World Cup) from the selection panel. But absolutely I feel like I’ve got a lot of one-day cricket and T20 cricket still left in me,” Carey said.
