‘One of the greatest performances’ – Twitter praise Jamaica Tallawahs as they thrash Barbados Royals to clinch their third CPL title
Jamaica Tallawahs and Barbados Royals locked horns in the final of the recently-concluded CPL 2022 at the Providence, Guyana. Both teams were chasing their third title in the history of the tournament. Tallawahs won it in 2013 and 2016 while Royals won it in 2014 and 2019. Talking about the game, the Blue Brigade (Royals) won the toss and elected to bat first keeping the knockout pressure in mind.
Batting first, the Royals had a great start as openers, skipped Kyle Myers and Rahkeem Cornwall scored 63 runs in the first six overs. The latter started well with 36 off 21 balls but his innings ended abruptly at the end of the powerplay. He became the first victim of Fabian Allen. Two over later, Allen took out Myers. At 69/2, Azam Khan and former skipper Jason Holder stitched a partnership of 48 runs.
Holder struggled during his innings of 17 runs as he played 19 balls. His misery was ended by Imad Wasim. On the other hand, Azam scored 51 off 40 balls. After them, none of the following batters could cross the double-digit mark. The team ended up on 161/7. For the Green Brigade (Jamaica), Nicholson Gordan and Fabian Allen took three wickets each while Imad Wasim took one.
Jamaica Tallawahs stormed to their third CPL title
In reply, Tallawahs had a poor start as Kennar Lewis failed to bring his bat down against the yorker from Kyle Myers. However, apart from this, the Royals’ bowlers had no answer to the onslaught from opposition batters. Brandon King and Shamarh Brooks stitched a partnership of 86 runs. The latter scored a brilliant 47 off 33 balls.
After his wicket, skipper Rovman Powell came and took the team over the line with King. The latter did the most of the scoring in the unbeaten partnership of 75 runs. King scored 83 off 50 balls including 13 fours and two sixes. On the other hand, Powell scored 14 off 13 balls. The team won the game by eight wickets and 3.5 overs to spare. With this, they are now three-time winners of the CPL.
