‘MI k aage koi jeet sakta hai kya’ – Fans react as Mumbai Indians beat Gujarat Giants despite hiccups in Women’s Premier League 2024
In the third game of the ongoing Women’s Premier League 2024 (WPL), defending champions, Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants took on each other. While the title holders started the tournament with a last-ball win, the Giants were playing their opening game. Meanwhile, in this game, MI Women won the toss and elected to bowl first despite the venue hosting the first two games of the tournament already.
With the bat, the Orange Army never got going as they kept losing wickets in regular intervals. Only four batters managed to get past the double-digit mark. For the Blue Brigade, Shabnam Ismail from South Africa took three wickets while Amelia Kerr from New Zealand took four. On the other hand, the likes of Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews took one each.
Mumbai Indians register their second win despite the hiccups
In reply, the defending champs had a poor start as they lost three wickets for 49 runs, making a possibly low-scoring one-sided game exciting. The opening pair of Matthews and Yastika Bhatia scored seven runs each. England international Brunt managed only 22 runs. Meanwhile, at this stage, the likes of India and MI skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Kerr put together 66 runs for the fourth wicket.
It looked like an easy win before the team lost the wickets of Kerr and Pooja Vastrakar in the 16th and 17th overs respectively. However, skipper Kaur stayed till the end and unlike the opening game, she scored the winning runs for the team. In the opening game against the Capitals, she got out when the team needed five off two balls. However, her teammate and debutant, Sajeevan Sajana hit a last-ball six to take the team over the line.
In this game, Kaur hit a six to seal the game on the first ball of the penultimate over and her team won the game by five wickets. With this game, every team has played at least one game in the tournament.
