‘Cheteshwar Pujara will do what…’ -Harbhajan Singh takes a sly dig at Rohit Sharma for his message to Pujara at Indore Test

A video has gone viral in India’s second innings which involved Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma. Rohit is seen giving instructions via Ishan Kishan to send a cue to Pujara who was racing towards his half-century. He wanted Pujara to go for the big shots and up the scoring rate. Pujara did hit a big six over the long-on fence but was dismissed a couple of balls later. When Harbhajan Singh was asked about Rohit Sharma’s act here is what he had to say.

“I don’t know what was the actual message sent. If the message was to look to play over mid-on, the player who is inside knows the situation and conditions the best and what the ball is doing. Let him play, let him understand what needs to be done in that situation. No one can judge better than him how easy or difficult it is to hit over mid-on. Watching from the outside, we feel that he can hit above mid-on, but sometimes it does not happen,” Harbhajan said.

Pujara’s shot did not surprise me-  Harbhajan Singh

“If there is a situation where a message comes from outside that the team is asking you to do something, Cheteshwar Pujara is certainly a player who will first do what the team needs. If the team needed runs there, he went for that. I think he is more than capable of hitting sixes. An atmosphere has been created that Pujara cannot hit over the top. I think if he wants to do that, he can do it better than a lot of the players. A Test cricketer can become a good T20 player but a T20 player can never become a good Test player. So Pujara’s shot did not surprise me,”   The former India off-spinner added.

India put on a below-par batting performance in the Third Test at Indore. They capitulated for 163 in the second innings, They set Australia a paltry target of 76. The Indian top order did not have the best of times in the second innings at Indore. Barring Pujara no one else could get a substantial score in the second innings and in the first innings India were bundled out for 109 in the first innings. India have already taken a 2-0 lead in the series because of victories at Nagpur and at Delhi.
