‘Is World Cup main bhi upset ho rahe‘ – Fans react to Afghanistan’s win by 69 runs to beat England in ODI World Cup 2023
The ODI World Cup 2023 saw its first upset on Sunday in New Delhi. Defending champions England were beaten by Afghanistan in the 13th game of the tournament. The margin of victory was 69 runs as the Afghans won their first game in the history of the tournament.
Defending 285 to win, Afghanistan bowlers did a remarkable job taking wickets at regular intervals. Apart from Harry Brook none of the English batters looked like putting up a big score on the board.
Jos Buttler had called the coin toss correctly and put the opposition into bat. There was just one change for the Afghanistan team after their loss to India in the same venue. England were still without Ben Stokes as they went in with an unchanged team.
Afghanistan takes home famous win against England
Rahmanullah Gurbaz began well scoring 80 runs from 57 balls with the help of 8 fours and 4 sixes. Ibrahim Zadran scored 28 runs from 48 balls with 3 hits to the fence as the openers added 114 runs for the first wicket.
Adil Rashid was brought into the attack and he got an immediate when he dismissed Ibrahim Zadran. The leg-spinner struck again when he had Rahmat Shah out stumped for a duck. Gurbaz was run out for 80 when he was looking good for a century. The Afghanistan team lost wickets in a heap to give England a chance to make a come back into the contest.
Ikram Alikhil then scored 58 runs as he got good support from Rashid Khan (23) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (28). This helped Afghanistan post 284 on the board on a batting-friendly track.
Jonny Bairstow was out for 2 while Joe Root was out bowled for 11 to leave England at 33/2. It was soon 68/3 when Dawid Malan was out for 32, and Naveen Ul Haq and Rashid Khan then struck. Jos Buttler was out for 9 while Rashid Khan got Livingstone for 10.
Harry Brook was the lone man standing as he top-scored with 66 runs from 61 balls with 7 fours and a six. His innings were ended by Mujeeb caught behind by Ikram Alkhil as this opened the floodgates. There were massive celebrations when Rashid Khan bowled Mark Wood to create history.
