Sunil Gavaskar makes massive claim about Mumbai and Rohit Sharma ahead of Indian T20 League 2023
The Mumbai franchise didn’t have a great outing in the preceding season of the Indian T20 League as they finished in the 10th position in 2022. The five-time champion went on to lose their first eight games consecutively and were the team to get knocked out of the playoffs.
Now, Rohit Sharma and his men will be looking to change their fortunes in the upcoming edition of the tournament. However, Mumbai will miss the services of their star bowler Jasprit Bumrah as he will be out from cricketing action for the next six months after he underwent back surgery in New Zealand. But the return of Jofra Archer to the squad will make the Mumbai bowling lineup stronger. Also, Mumbai roped in Cameron Green for INR 17.5 crores, who has impressed everyone since his debut for Australia.
Former Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar believes that Mumbai will be one of the favourites to win the title in 2023 despite having a disastrous season last year. He believes that Archer could be a trump card for Mumbai in Bumrah’s absence.
‘Rohit Sharma will do something really special’ – Sunil Gavaskar
“Jofra Archer is one (trump card) for sure. Ishan Kishan after his ODI double hundred will be somebody to watch out for as well. And I think Rohit Sharma will do something really special this season,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
“I think their strength will be the presence of Jofra Archer. He can pick wickets upfront and also bowl a couple of overs in the end, block the runs and pick up wickets as well. I think it (weakness) could really be the spin combination. They’ve got a love new-ball attack but the spin combination just looks a little bit light,” he further added.
The sixteenth season of the Indian T20 League will kickstart on March 31st, where the defending Champions Gujarat will take on Chennai at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Mumbai will start their campaign against Bangalore on April 2nd at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore.
